Summary: I chose to do this topic because everyday teens abuse a variety of drugs, both legal and illegal. The use of illegal drugs is increasing, especially among young teens. Teens use alcohol and other drugs for many reasons which includes curiosity, to reduce stress, to feel grown up or to "fit in".Such as marijuana;the average age of first marijuana use is fourteen. Drug use is associated with a variety of negative consequences, including increased risk of serious drug use later in life, school failure, and poor judgment. All of these things can put teens at risk for accidents, violence, unsafe sex,and suicide.
Facts: "Using alcohol and tobacco at a young age increases the risk of using other drugs later. Some teens will experiment and stop, or continue to use occasionally, without significant problems. Others will develop a dependency, moving on to more dangerous drugs and causing significant harm to themselves and possibly others."

Summary :
Today most teens have very poor health issues. Teens that are not happy with their bodies are at a higher risk for future binge eating, smoking, poor eating, and very little physical activity according to research from the university of Minnesota school public health. When it comes to teens and their eating habits they are very poor. More and more teens every year suffer from the eating disorder of obesity because of their poor eating habits and their lack of physical activity. Having bad eating habits does not only affect you physically but it can also play a big factor on how well you do in school. Study show that eating a nutritional breakfast can give you more energy through out the day, in a result paying attention through out the day. I also learned that having bad eating habits can lead to other heath issues such as asthma symptoms because eating unhealthy can lead to unhealthy lungs. I believe having healthy eating habits can only have us live longer and happier lives.

This topic is very interesting to me because most schools sell junk food in vending machines, which makes younger kids and teenagers become bulk or become extremely overwieght. In one of my articles, elementary school children from the ages 9-11 aren't meeting the basic standards of physical activity guidelines in PE. Oakland schools have a strict law where elementary schools and middle schools can't have any after school sales that negotiates junk food.
fact: Children's health is becoming a BIG issue. 75% of beverages (soda) were sold in vending machines. 85% of snacks (cookies, chips & candy) was sold in vending machines.

Summary:
I chose to do young gang violances because we are the main targets for gangs now in days. Gangs have been roming all over our neighborhoods since as long as we can remember. They might not have been as bad back in the earlier years, but as we get older the younger generations get worser. No matter how hard you may try someone is always going to approch you and ask you what you claim and what crew your in. You may not be in any gangs at all but just by hanging out or associating with a group other groups will consider you part of their crew and instantly you have enimies. Most of which sometimes you don't even know are or were your enemies. So practically your always going to have to choose between a sertant color; clique; and numbers. Facts: Theres gangs all over the world but it all depeneds in the neighborhood you live in how bad the gang influences are. If your in a gang theres always a code you have to live by. Depending what gang you belong to some codes may not be as harsh as others. For example, if you see someone from the opposite gang you instantly have to start a riot with them, throw up your signs, and you can't back down at all. Or else your considered a fake and you can't stand up for yourself.

Summary: I chose this topic because it is very relavent to me right now. My aunt's kids have both been caught binge drinking and abusing alcohol recently. Because of this I want to learn more about the statistics of youth alcohol abuse and find out the cause and effects of it.
Facts: One fact that I learned is that 25 percent of alcohol abuse in the United States is by underage drinkers. Another fact that is pervasive in my mind is that in 1998 alcohol componies created advertisements that are more appealing to the youth. Joel Grub, a resercher at the Prevention Research Center in Berkeley, said that "Kids who said they liked the ads that they saw and paid more attention to the alcohol ads were more likely to drink [...]" (http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?file=/e/a/1998/10/21/NEWS4308.dtl).

I wanted to do gang violence because there are so many teenagers that are involved in it these days. Gangs have been going around everywhere before we were even planned to be born. Now these gangs are trying to get our attention to get involved in gangs so that it can spread around the nation or even the world. Before, there wasnt that much violence then what is going on right this moment. Even if you try to hide, people might ask you what "side" you're on. If you say the wrong answer or just say that you're not in a gang, they might take it so personal that they might even shoot you and run away. And by not being in a gang means that you are not associating or hang out with a gang member or they might think bad about you or into you might be jumped into that gang. So many people have died because of this issue that's going on in North America, Central America and even South America. So many families that have been hurt about their loved ones killed innocently or not innocently about this violence. But there's always that question families have in their minds... "where are the police? Who is going to stop this?" Just because of a color, of where you might live, or of what sign you might represent, these people get killed.
Facts: Big or small cities, there are so many homicides. In Oakland, nearly 30 percent of the city's homicide victims--38 out of 88 this year-- are teenagers, and the number of youth slayings is on track to double 2005's total, when 15 of 94 homicide victims were 19 years old or younger. Oakland saw twice as many Latinos slain last year as in 2004, while San Francisco saw an increase of 50 percent during the same period. Of the 96 homicides in San Francisco in 2005, 15 victims were Latino, compared with 10 Latino victims out of 88 slayings in 2004. oakland recorded 94 homicides last year with 25 Latino victims, compared with 12 out of killings in 2004.

Influence is a problem in today's youth. The reason teens do drugs and join gangs can be caused from bad influence. Older people influence teens by doing bad things. Kids think its cool if they do stuff that older people are doing

Summary:Childhood obesity is affecting many children across the nation. Symptoms that affect obese children include diabetes, high blood pressure, and many more. A major contributor to childhood obesity includes the easy access to junk food.
Although there are many contributors to childhood obesity, there are private gyms, such as the Overtime Fitness Inc., specializing in teens and helping to fight obesity. There are personal trainers who provide one-on-one lessons and nutritionalists who teach important nutritional values/dieting. The use of video games to excercise is also included. These "excergames" require kids to box, dance, and jump. Fun Facts: In 2000 16 percent of teens and children were obese., double the proportion in 1976. The largest distribution of exergames at schools is in West Virginia where DDR was installed in 765 public schools.

I didn't choose this topic because I can relate to it; I chose it because there are so many homeless people in the Bay Area. When you walk around San Francisco, you will most likely see many homeless people. You might not see it, but there are many youths that are homeless as well. Family conflict is ultimately the major cause of their homelessness, which can also include parental abuse.
Youths make up 40% of the homeless population, from ages 14-25. Most of homeless youth are gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender, they make up 3-5% of the population and they make up to 20-40% of homeless youth. In San Francisco, between 700 and 1,300 homeless youth, ages 12-24 are gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender. 1) Why do you think that mostly gay/lesbian/bisexual/transgender people are homeless among youth?

I chose Gang Violence as my topic because it is an issue that is rapidly spreading throughout the world. Kids these days have shorter life spans due to gang violence, so it is imperative to try to prevent it.
Facts:There are 2,500 accidental gun deaths a year in the U.S. Chicago alone had 600 killings occur in one year. Over the last 5 years there have been 23,000 crimes by gangs in L.A. |

Summary: High school dropout rates is a concerning issue because a school education is important to having a more fortunate future. Many kids drop out of high school because of their own reasons, mostly pertaining to an already less fortunate life. This topic is interesting to me because sometimes I wonder if all the work I'm doing is actually worth it. A lot of dropouts have thought: "What's the use?" As for myself, I wonder if doing the IB program is worth taking part in. I can probably make it to a good college without the IB program, so why do I do it? I mean, students from schools without the IB program do it all the time. Then I realize that I work hard in school because I want to. I like feeling accomplished after working hard. I want to gain as much education as I can, no matter how boring school can be. I plan to keep my options open for my future.
Facts: “The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported that the 2001 unemployment rate for adults over 25 without a high school diploma was 7.2 percent." That percentage gets lowered with each higher level of education received. “For years, studies have shown that the chances that a Hispanic child would drop out of school have been greater for any other group.” However, “96 percent [of the youth identified in NAM’s California Youth Poll] believe that if they work hard, they can achieve their goals.”

I chose to do my project on High School Dropouts because i found that a lot of the Seniors today are having trouble passing the High School exit exam. The rates seem to be increasing rapidly every year. This may be due the many distractions in todays society such as drugs, TV, alcohol, and immense computer use. I believe that without a solid education you will end up on the streets, and jobless.
Facts: "Every day of the school year, about 3,000 high-school students nationally drop out." www.easyinfo.com/articles/a08.php I also found out that most students who drop out of school are doing poorly in school and feel that there teachers don' care.

Teen violence is a growing concern nowadays. Violence in the media--whether through cartoons, movies, tv shows or music--has strangely lead people to believe that it is alright to cause harm or violence out in the public. In fact, many believe that the media is to blame for causing our youth's dilemmas. Teen violence is also thought to be triggered through social, cultural, and individual factors such as bullying and being exposed to a violent environment.
Facts: By age 12, the average kid would have witnessed at least 8,000 murders and more than 100,000 acts of violence on TV. Statistically, 1 in 5 kids admit to being bullies or being bullied. Also, one of the main reasons that children become violent is through their exposure to violence in their own homes, whether it is directed towards them, or towards others.

I chose to do teen alcohol and drug abuse because it seems to be a problem in our society today. Teens use alcohol and drugs for many reasons such as: they might want to fit in (socially), they may like the ways drugs and alcohol make them feel, or they may want to seem grown-up. There is a variety of substances teens try such as: cigarettes, alcohol, household chemicals (inhalants), prescription and nonprescription medicinces, and illeagal drugs. Alcohol and drug abuse is a leading cause of teen death or injury related to car accident, suicides, violence, and drowning. Teen drug or alcohol problems may lead difficulty building meaningful personal relationships or holding a job.

Summary: The article talks about how today's teen overspends on unecessary products. The present teen is now earning money for products that are considered fashionable. Companies are sucking in teenagers into buying their products. Only adults are unaffected by such advertisments. Parental influence can help the child take better decisions among choosing whether or not to buy the product.

Summary: I believe teen drug and alcohol abuse is an important topic due to the fact that it's all around us. Each day percents rise in number of teens and/or tweens that consume alcohol, use, and even "experiment" with drugs. Since we know it exists why aren't we trying harder to prevent it?
I've learned that the average age when youth first try alcohol is 11 years old for boys and 13 for girls. The average age at which Americans begin drinking regularly is about 15 years of age. One final fact that is very pervasive in my mind is: Leading causes in death: homicide, automobile accidents, and suicide all tend to tie into alcohol abuse.

My topic is teen abuse. This is important to me because I have experienced this once before in my life. I feel that no child should ever face any form of abuse, whether it’s physical abuse or verbal abuse. When I was younger I faced physical abuse almost everyday, but now that I’m older I don’t get physically abused, but the worst kind of all. Verbal abuse. Being that I’ve been facing it for a while I’ve learned some ways to not let it affect me. And reading the article on the topic I chose it made me understand what I’m going through a lot more. So for anyone who is going through the same problem, just know that you are not alone and there are ways to help.

Summary: The topic I have reserched is parental voilence. The reports on parental abuse has increased by 300% over the past twenty years. Children look upon their parents to help guide them through life and a lot of children in the U.S. don't have the support and love they need to get through school or other obstacles. A lot of the time, if the child doesn't find love at home, they will look for it in the wrong places. Kids don't even know that their is help out there most of the time or sometimes they can't afford an attourney. Many children all across the U.S. have been verbally abused, physically abused, and many females have been sexually abused by their own fathers. Children in some other countries are treated as a piece of movable property; they're forced into labor, prostitution, and pornography. "Child abuse exists here in America too, the stats don’t show it because children have no voice, know the truth: Children in America are not safe."
To many people, dangers are on the internet, teachers, coaches, etc., but the REAL danger is within a child's own family. Is this how we love our children? Is this our way of protecting our "own"?

Dating Violence is an all too often occurrence among teens. I learned about it in health last year and it really stuck in my mind. I think that if more teens, especially teen girls, are informed about this topic, it will occur less often.
Facts: 1 in 3 teens know someone who has been physically hurt by their partner as of 2005. A common date rape drug is GHB (gamma-hydroxybutyrate).
